Solo Piping

As well as spending time playing with pipe bands I also enjoy taking time to focus on solo piping.

I have been receiving tuition from Dr. Jack Taylor for the past couple of years. Jack is a former member of Buchan Pipe Band who stood next to me in my first year with them. He is also an accomplished solo piper, winning the gold medal at Inverness in 1973. As well as this he is also the president of the Piobaireachd Society.

Competing in solo competitions is fun but also a serious business. The Highland games is a great experience and also a brilliant way of making new friends. Myself and good friend Sean McHugh (who is also a member of Buchan) spent the majority of summer 2015 traveling around the solo circuit having a mini competition league between ourselves.

In November 2015 we finished with what we called the Championship Final. The North of Scotland Branch Solos. This was our last solo competition in the under 18s category, before moving up into the Adults. It was a very close competition and I was very pleased to win the under 17s category: MSR, Hornpipe and Jig, Overall under 17 winner and 2nd in the open Piobaireachd.image
